How to Get Rid of Chapped Lips (Without Petroleum)

A practical routine for chronically chapped lips: the five causes, the five-step fix, and why petroleum balm keeps failing.

Chapped lips are one of those problems that shouldn't be chronic — and yet for a lot of people, they are. Balm in every pocket, lips still cracked by February. Here's a practical approach that addresses the causes instead of endlessly coating the symptom.

First, Know Why Lips Chap

Lip skin has no oil glands. It cannot produce its own protective lipids, so it depends entirely on outside protection. Add winter wind, indoor heating, sun, dehydration, and lip-licking, and the thin skin dries, tightens, and cracks.

Most chronic chapped lips come down to a handful of causes:

  1. Lip licking — saliva evaporates fast and takes lip moisture with it. This is the big one, and flavored lip balm makes it worse.
  2. Dry air — heated indoor air in winter and A/C in a Texas summer both strip moisture.
  3. The wrong balm — petroleum-based balms seal the surface but never condition the tissue, so lips stay dependent without improving. We break this down fully in Why Your Lip Balm Isn't Working.
  4. Dehydration — lips show it before the rest of you feels it.
  5. Irritants — menthol, camphor, fragrance, and flavor oils in lip products; also toothpaste residue for some people.

The Routine That Actually Works

Step 1 — Stop licking. Easier said than done, which is exactly why step 2 matters: switch to an unflavored balm so there's nothing worth licking.

Step 2 — Switch to a conditioning balm. You want ingredients that absorb into lip tissue, not just coat it. Tallow is the standout here — its fatty acids closely resemble your skin's own lipids, so it conditions the skin itself, while beeswax supplies the protective barrier. (Why tallow works on lips.) Five-ingredient formulas (tallow, shea butter, coconut oil, beeswax, vitamin E) cover everything chapped lips need and nothing that irritates them.

Step 3 — Apply before damage, not after. The best times: before bed (you lose the most lip moisture overnight, mouth-breathing especially), before going outside in wind or cold, and after eating or brushing your teeth.

Step 4 — Be gentle with flakes. Skip the aggressive scrubs on cracked lips. A soft, damp washcloth after a shower removes loose flakes without tearing skin that's trying to recover.

Step 5 — Drink water and give it a week. Lip skin turns over quickly. With the irritants removed and real conditioning applied consistently, most people see a meaningful difference within days.

When It's Not Just Chapping

If your lips are severely cracked, bleeding, or not improving after a couple of weeks of consistent care — or if the corners of your mouth are cracked and sore — it's worth seeing a doctor or dermatologist. Persistent cheilitis can have medical causes that no balm addresses.

The Balm We'd Hand You

Ours is the one we designed around every principle above: unscented and unflavored (nothing to lick), petroleum-free, five ingredients, with tallow we render ourselves from our own ranch's cattle in Springtown, Texas. The 4-pack exists because the real secret to consistent application is never being more than an arm's reach from a stick.
