Walk down any checkout aisle and lip balm looks like a candy display: vanilla, cherry, mint mojito, birthday cake. Flavor sells lip balm. It also quietly works against the entire purpose of the product.
Here's the case for the boring option.
Fragrance Is the #1 Irritant in Lip Care
Synthetic fragrance is consistently among the most common causes of contact irritation in cosmetics — and lips are the worst possible place for it. Lip skin is the thinnest on your face, and when it's already chapped and cracked, its barrier is compromised. Applying fragrance to broken lip skin is applying a known irritant directly to the one place least equipped to handle it.
Irritated lips get drier. Drier lips get more balm. It's a loop — the same one flavored formulas create through licking, which we covered in Why Your Lip Balm Isn't Working.
Flavor Trains You to Lick Your Lips
This is the sneakier problem. A balm that tastes like dessert gets licked — constantly, unconsciously, all day. Saliva is one of the fastest ways to dry out lips: it evaporates quickly and takes lip moisture with it, and its digestive enzymes are hard on thin skin.
A flavored lip balm is, functionally, a product that treats dryness while prompting the behavior that causes it. Unflavored balm removes the temptation entirely. It's a small change with an outsized effect.
“Unscented” Should Mean Simple — Check the Label
One caveat: some “unscented” products still contain masking fragrance — fragrance added to cancel out other smells. The fix is the same as always: read the ingredient list. If it's short enough to read, you're probably in good shape.
Ours is five lines long: beef tallow, shea butter, organic coconut oil, natural beeswax, vitamin E oil. No fragrance, no masking fragrance, no flavor oils. The faint natural scent it does have comes from the beeswax — mild, neutral, and gone the moment it's on.
