The five checks
- Where's the tallow from? The base fat is the product. Most brands buy commodity tallow from third-party suppliers and can't tell you more than a country. - Count the ingredients. Five or six is a complete tallow lip balm: tallow, a butter, a light oil, beeswax for hold, vitamin E. Fifteen means fillers; petrolatum or mineral oil anywhere means it's a chapstick wearing a tallow costume. (Tallow vs. chapstick.)
- Is there real hold? Beeswax is what keeps a balm on your lips through coffee and conversation. Pure-tallow sticks feel lovely and vanish in minutes.
