The average commercial lip balm contains somewhere between 15 and 25 ingredients. Ours contains five. This post is the entire ingredient list, explained one at a time — what each ingredient does, and why nothing else earned a spot.
1. Beef Tallow — The Base
Tallow is beef fat, slow-rendered at low heat until it's pure, clean, and shelf-stable. It's the foundation of the formula and the reason the balm works: tallow's fatty acid profile closely matches the lipids in human skin, so it absorbs into lip tissue and conditions it rather than coating the surface the way petroleum does.

2. Shea Butter — Softness and Glide
Shea butter is a plant butter pressed from the nuts of the shea tree, rich in its own skin-compatible fatty acids. In this formula it does two jobs: it adds a second layer of conditioning alongside the tallow, and it softens the balm's texture so the stick glides on smoothly instead of dragging across chapped skin.
3. Organic Coconut Oil — Lightweight Conditioning
Coconut oil is lighter than tallow or shea, and it melts right at skin temperature. That melt is what makes the balm feel immediate — it liquefies the moment it touches your lips and carries the heavier ingredients with it. We use certified organic coconut oil.
4. Natural Beeswax — Structure and Staying Power
Beeswax is what makes a balm a stick instead of a jar of grease. It gives the formula its shape, and on your lips it forms the protective barrier that holds everything in place against wind and cold. This is the job petroleum does in conventional balm — beeswax does it naturally, and it's why our balm actually stays on.
5. Vitamin E Oil — The Finisher
Vitamin E (tocopherol) is a fat-soluble antioxidant. In the balm it conditions skin and helps keep the natural oils in the formula fresh. It's the closest thing this ingredient list has to a “preservative” — and it's a vitamin.
What's Not in It
The shorter list is what we left out, and every omission is deliberate:
- No petrolatum or mineral oil — coats without conditioning (why that matters)
- No fragrance or flavor — the most common irritants in lip care, and flavor makes you lick (more here)
- No menthol or camphor — “tingle” is irritation wearing a costume
- No synthetic waxes, dyes, or preservatives — five working ingredients didn't need help
Read the Label — That's the Point
A five-ingredient formula means the ingredient list is the marketing. Beef tallow, shea butter, organic coconut oil, natural beeswax, vitamin E oil. That's every word on the label and every word in the tube.
